Cali Nathanson is an M.A. candidate in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Regional Studies at Columbia University's Harriman Institute. She received her undergraduate degree from Smith College in 2020, double majoring in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies & Religion. As an undergraduate, she spent a summer in St. Petersburg, Russia, completing an internship at the Kunstkamera Museum. Prior to arriving at Columbia University, she interned for the collections department of the Wende Museum of Cold War History, archiving Soviet-era Russian language artifacts and assisting in the development of a permanent center for Russian-Speaking Jewry. At the Harriman Institute, she focuses on the Russian Arctic, with specific interests in climate security, territorial sovereignty, indigenous rights, and natural resource development. Her upcoming thesis is on the topic of climate change in the Arctic, and what the Kremlin believes it can gain from ignoring it.
